I have visited· I would like to visit

JohnLindsay couldn't find on 1st Mar 2012 I found out about this in the Stanmer booklet sold by the preservation society, reading it on the train home, The booklet which I picked up at Ditchling Beacon doesn't show it. But then it doesn't show the tumuli or the remains of the hill settlement either and says the beacon word comes from Armada times, and the pond is 17th century, so there is quite a bit of work to be done. The leaflet from the Wildlife trust of course is wildlife. There are some references in the stanmer booklet but they are far from clear so more work to be done. Spent an afternoon wandering around Stanmer Park, lots of stones lying around but no idea whether I found this clump or not.

Natural sarsen stones and Iron Age or early Roman enclosure in East Sussex. The small copse of trees seems to have come about because there is a group of sarsen stones half buried on the spot, and it seems that a farmer at some point decided to mark off the area and not plough it rather than go to the trouble of removing the stones.

There is a ditch surrounding part of the site, though this was probably a later addition to an otherwise ancient site. The history of the site begins in the Romano-British period, where between the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, there was a some buildings in the vicinity.

One of the naturally placed sarsens on the site is on the corner of one square building, of which several large postholes were found, which has been interpreted by some as the site of a Romano-British shrine but more recently thought is that this is just a farm building. The enclosure ditches measure 2 metres wide and almost 2 metres in depth. Finds have included numerous sherds of Iron Age and Roman pottery, copious amounts of animal bones, a silver finger ring and La Tene brooch. One of the recent finds was a baby burial.

Latest from the dig, August 2012 by Andy B on Friday, 07 September 2012

The excavations at Rocky are progressing well despite the slightly inclement summer months, with plenty of rain disrupting the digging.

The lower east/west ditch is proving to be the most productive with regard finds. The ditch is quite interesting with a sharp v-shaped typical section at the west end which is dramatically widening as it progresses eastwards. The north side of this ditch is quite elongated and may prove to be the location of a later negative lynchet cutting into the ditch. The feature has produced copious amounts of animal bone, including the almost complete skull of a cow, including the horns. Pottery has been forthcoming in large amounts with several rim section of samian ware that hint at a number of vessels. Among the rarer finds has been a finger ring, which is currently at the British Museum being studied.

The upper east/west ditch has also produced some interesting finds of pottery, but the most significant happening was the revealing of a baby burial. The infant was reverently buried in one of the lower fills of the ditch, in a crouched position.

The dig will continue until October at least, with the potential to open more of the area within the confines of the Iron Age/Romano British enclosure seeking a sense of purpose for its construction.

Newcomers are welcome whatever their experience. To join the excavation team please contact the BHAS web site or John Funnell at co-ordinator@brightonarch.org.uk or call 0844 5888 277
