Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Greater London
Recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 401393, "Muswell Hill derives its name from an old well on the top of the hill where formerly the fraternity of St John of Jesusalem, whose headquarters were at Clerkenwell, had a considerable farm conferred on them by Bishop Beauvais or Beauvoir … Miraculous cures were attributed to the well, and it drew a large concourse of pilgrims to the adjoining shrine of Our Lady in whose honour a chapel was erected". Pastscape continues, saying the site of the wells seems to have been completely forgotten, though they were in existence 80 years ago.
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Mossy Well, Muswell Hill, Haringey, London, which mentions a second well, St Mary's Well, which was nearby but has been long capped off. But, the Journal adds, it may be the same well as Mus Well, but renamed by local Augustinian nuns who built their chapel here.
The Journal also includes local tradition about this well, together with a list of reference sources for more information.
Note: Do you have any information, illustrations or drawings of this well? Do you know where it used to be located?
