St Peter and St Paul's Church (Chaldon)
St Peter and St Paul's Church (Chaldon) submitted by Anne T : This is a scan of a postcard of the "Ladder of Salvation of the Human Soul, and the Road to Heaven". I found in my step-father's collection which I inherited when he died just over a year ago. I believe it originates from the 1930s or 1940s, possibly earlier. The card gives a detailed description of the painting on the back, leaving only just room for an address and a very brief message. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Surrey

This church, which has its origins back in the 11th century, has a wall painting circa 1200AD described by Historic England as "one of the most important English wall paintings of that date.

Measuring 17ft by 11ft, it is coloured ochre, red and white. In two halves, divided by a 'cloudy band', it depicts a type of purgatorial ladder. Historic England List ID 1029813 describes the panel as: "Divided in two by cloudy band with the lower half decorated to torments and punishments of the wicked, the upper half devoted to the judgement and salvation of souls. In the centre is a ladder with Christ above. The main figures include the tree of knowledge,). with the serpent (bottom right), the seven deadly sins and a cauldron for boiling murderers. Across the top are depicted the 3 Marys and Elijah and Enoch ascending to heaven, Christ defeating the devil and Christ preaching to the spirits in prison".

The church is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 403794, where this important painting is refered to as the Ladder of Salvation. The church has its own website - see St Peter and St Pauls, Chaldon, which tells us the church is mentioned in the Domesday book and "Visitors are very welcome and the church is open from 10am to 4.00pm daily".
