I am a science writer completing a doctorate at LaTrobe University, Melbourne, on non-literate knowledge systems, in particular memorising vast amounts of pragmatic information. I'm drawing on cross-cultural generalisations of oral and material mnemonic devices from hunter gatherer (especially Australian) and small-scale sedentary (especially Puebloan) knowledge systems, and then applying this to the archaeological record.
