Round Barrow in Cheshire

Not a lot to see here. Something for the enthusiast with an active imagination. Allegedly the remains of a round barrow. Can find nothing in the SMR. Arguably, I found a slight raised area to the SW of St Cross Church, N of Branden Drive, with a circular depressed area around it (circled in pic). This was the most convincing thing I could find that there was something here. Just to the W there was a small mound among some trees near the footpath, but I did not find that so convincing. Thoughts anyone?

Hi, I was told the slight mound surrounded by Lime trees was the location of the old cross/stone.There is some information in the transactions of the historical society of Lancashire and Cheshire about the location of Crosstown and why it was so called.Best of luck

Knutty

As a local I too have never been able to find any other source for this supposed round barrow other than this website and a minimal reference to it in the book "Prehistoric Cheshire" written by Paul and Victoria Morgan.

I cannot be 100% sure, but I would think that the reference here would have been taken from "Prehistoric Cheshire" by Paul and Victoria Morgan, who used to be major contributors, and indeed in Vicky's case, editor of this site.

As a resident of Knutsford I'd be interested to know where the original data for this entry came from.
I've not been able to find any refference to this site in local books and our local historians don't seem to know about it either.
At one time the field was used as a drying field for washing but that's all I know about it.
