Ham Hill stone circle submitted by JimChampion : The modern stone circle is surrounded by the old quarry's spoil heaps - this view, looking west, is from on top of one of these heaps. My umbrella-wielding assistant gives an idea of the scale, and an indication of the weather conditions. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Modern Stone Circle in Somerset

This circle was built by the Millenium Project to commemorate the centuries of quarrying on Ham Hill and the stonemasons that worked here. The fifteen stones are all of the local "hamstone".

This site is still here despite the fuss about 'pagan activities' (see this news story).

Ham Hill stone circle submitted by AngieLake : Much thought must have gone into the design of this modern circle at Ham Hill, as there is even an outlier stone (nearer to the monument, which is on the northern summit). (1 comment)

Just found this comment under my pic with the outlier stone:

HAMANDDOULTING
(2007-06-13) Sorry to disappoint but the circle was made up as we went along over a period of about 4/5 years, When ever we quarried a large enough stone that stayed together my farther would holt all work and it was added to the circle , The small stone to the north side was put there many years before the circle was ever thought of. The biggest stones are in the region of 10 tonnes each and took two mechanical diggers with a combined weight of 43 tonnes to erect them.

Iron Age adventures at Ham Hill

YOUNGSTERS are preparing to be taken back to the Iron Age at an archaeology fun day this February half-term at the Ham Hill Country Park at Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

The event, organised and run by South Somerset District Council's countryside rangers, will give children the opportunity to dig for artefacts, make their own coins, have their face painted as an Iron Age warrior and piece together Roman mosaics.

Bookings are now being taken ahead of the event. A session for under-eights will take place between 10am and 12noon and an over-eight's session between 1.30pm and 3.30pm, both on Thursday, February 18.

It is part of a series of events being held by the district council over the school holidays to provide educational, outdoor activities at the Green Flag country park with Heritage Lottery funding support.

Sessions cost £4 per child and free for accompanying adults. Book now on 01935-845946.
