This large ancient circular earthwork, built on the Dragon's flow, is to be found beside the River Aer, between the Aer and the Gwaun, in a field belonging to Cronllwyn Farm. The name of this former manor is intriguing; its means 'ring of trees' hints at several possibilities - wooden fort (timber or trees - willow perhaps), a wood henge, a temple? Does the name refer to the original nature and character of the earthwork? Indeed the name of the village, Llanychaer, may do so too. It is possibly derived from the ancient Briton's words for circular enclosure (place of safety, security, sanctuary, fortress) of the chieftain - Llan, and 'ych-aer'. The tribal chief was called the bo-aer, ‘bo’ meaning bull or ox. ‘ych’ also means bull or ox. Contrary to convention's insistence llan does not mean (Christian) church, the term has a longer history.
YDdraig (the Dragon) curls around and through the earthwork and spirals to a point in the centre. She shows an interest in several sites on the farm - as have archaeologists.
