Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Derbyshire

The spring was located near to the Bath Inn, now renamed and was still marked until the 1900s on the O/S. Its waters were said to be warm and saline, the only one in the county. Local belief records that it was a Roman bath or older, not so fanciful an idea considering that Roman station Navio is located nearby. Pilkington (1789) notes that:
“I took pains to discover it, but a credibly informed that the impregnation is considerably strong. It is said to be used in ulcerous and scorbutic complaints”
Evans (1912) notes that in 1830 a Robert Middleton of Smalldale, erected a bath here, by then ruinous although its size could be ascertained being five feet deep and reached by six steeps. Local historian Naylor (1983) suggests that the bath house could still be traced but this must have been lost long before this because the present owner does not recall it. The spring now arises through a small stone lined chamber and fills a pool and drains away as a culverted stream within the Eden Tree Caravan site. The water is said to be salty and warm, however the evidence of considerable aquatic plant growth may suggest that the spring is not saline.
