Ecclesall Woods
Ecclesall Woods submitted by stu : SK3265 8320. Great looking stone in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffiled. One of the oval enclosures has been so heavily carved it stands proud of the rock. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Yorkshire (South)
This earthfast, sandstone, carved boulder lies in Ecclesall Woods, south-west Sheffield and was re-discovered in 1981. It can be difficult to find without a G.P.S. receiver.

An extract from the monuments description in the S.M.R.:

"The carving on the slightly domed upper surface of the rock consists of three sub-oval, deeply cut rings, each surrounding one to four shallower cups connected by gutters. The central ring with its internal cups has been emphasised by cutting away the sandstone on three sides to form a raised oval boss. This feature is possibly unique and illustrates that the carving was designed with visual prominence in mind rather than being executed purely as a ceremonial act. Other unusual features of the carving are the gutters near the edge of the slab which surround much of the carving. Internal gutters subdivide the slab into several irregular, enclosure-like, zones. The various elements of the carving are not cut to a consistent depth, frequently shallow features being intersected by deeper ones. This feature indicates that the carving was not executed as a unitary design but has been modified over time. There are several irregular patches of shallow carving on the slab which may represent attempts to cut away obtrusive features of earlier designs. Elsewhere on the slab they serve to emphasise particular features."

Note: Second example of prehistoric rock art found in park.

Re: Ecclesall Woods by Anonymous on Saturday, 17 June 2023
there is clearly a temple on the left that is blended into looking like a priests hat , this would represent the atmosphere hence space and time also the sun ... the sun reflects down in a zig zag - a well known patern from over millions of years ago. could mean creation

also if you look upside down you will notice a broad horned man

The carvings are made at the end of the Neolithic period as hunter gatherers move to agriculture, if it's not a son of God descended from the sun the father over earth it must depict a priest and a horizon, it clearly depicts a priest with a symbol on a head gear, some ancient historic beliefs were all very similar with today's religious beliefs.

Re: Ecclesall Woods by Anonymous on Wednesday, 18 November 2020
This is the baptism of Jesus Christ it depicts Jesus upsidedown referring he comes from the sky and heavens the priest is has a simple body though large on the face of the rock the priests arm sits next to the body on the left, the priest also has a head gown and simple cross is engraved lightly in the top of the priest's head ware.

It is not cup and ring art

This is a Bronze Age monument made by pagans and has nothing whatsoever to do with the cult of Jesus.

Some pagan beliefs were similar to modern beliefs and the cult of Christ is something of relationship with the sun like an early calendar for important ancient agricultural events.

The rock art is to do with the baptism of Jesus Christ , one head is turned upside down resembling coming from the sky and god and the other is a priest with a hat and robe around head with a Armin the left also displaying a simple body.

You've certainly got some imagination on you, that's for sure. It's got absolutely nothing to do with Jesus at all (I'm guessing he told you it was though!!!)

Council worker stumbles across 3,000-year-old carving by bat400 on Friday, 16 July 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Submitted by coldrum ---

PREHISTORIC art 3,000 years old was discovered by chance in woodland by a council worker while carrying out routine maintenance work.

John Gilpin, a woodlands officer in the Parks and Countryside department, stumbled upon the find in Ecclesall Woods.

He discovered a boulder with a series of markings, lines and cuts - which, after being examined by experts, has been declared a significant archaeological find.

Jim McNeil, of South Yorkshire Archaeological Service, said: "I was called in and recorded the discovery, taking photographs. "I have taken advice from a specialist who considers this to be an important piece of prehistoric rock art. This is the second example of such rock art from Ecclesall Woods, although other examples are known from the Peak District and further north in the Pennines."

The previous discovery of prehistoric rock art in Ecclesall Woods was in 1983. The only other example nearby is at Gardom's Edge, north of Baslow in the Peak District.

Mary Bagley, director of parks and countryside at Sheffield Council, said: "This just goes to show what things we have in our parks, woodlands and countryside that we didn't know were there - and to think we were a City of Culture all those years ago."
