Brucethedruid visited on 1st Aug 2015 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 I first visitied this site many years ago and the photos as displayed here are very accurate of how it was then, but this place has had a major revamp and is now accomodating. (I will supply new photos of it soon) I do recommend a visit and do suggest you give yourself time to settle into the ambience of a place that once was "visited by Jesus." This site is not recognised for what it actually is, the restoration of this site is to be acknowledged as a restoration it is a shame it was not restored with the intent of historical value. :-(

St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon)
St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon) submitted by DavidCWoods : The well is obviously cared for, with a housing produced in a “rustic” fashion – apparently using chimney stacks! It is decorated in a mixture of tile collage and primitive styled painting. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Essex

After mistaking South Ockendon for the south of North Ockendon I found this well on the second attempt. Once the venue was confirmed, finding it was simple – there is a labelled gate leading from the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene.

St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon)
St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon) submitted by Brucethedruid : A view from across the lake. The baptism canal is based on the original concept of baptism, the natural spring in ancient times would have provided a perfect place to perform baptism, it is believed that by submerging the head in water all or any bad or evil spirit would be banished from the body and the body would be cleansed and left pure. St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon)
St. Cedd's Well (North Ockendon) submitted by Brucethedruid : St Cedd of Bradwell on Sea with his brother Chad to which Chadwell Heath gets its name travelled through Upminster, it is fair to assume they would have stopped at this natural spring and also that this natural spring would have been seen as a holy place by pagans and that this place is in fact a place of sacred importance. Jesus and his entourage' travelled across Essex, they travelled with ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

pleased to have been of assistance on this one. The church guide
suggests this well may have been used by the celtic saint, as a place of baptism, especially as it is close to Upminster an old minster site and to Tilbury where once a chapel stood. The manor house stood nearby until bombed in WW2 and evidence is that most local manor houses are built on pre-existing past ancient foundations of one type or another, using the best sites around
