Ashdown Forest Centre
Ashdown Forest Centre submitted by coldrum : Mesolithic Shelter (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in East Sussex. Has a display of the history and wildlife of the forest.
Display includes prehistoric and Roman artifacts. There is now a reconstruction of a mesolithic hut. The outdoor construction, which is made using only natural materials, was erected to show how people lived on the forest 9,000 years ago.

It was made by the East Sussex Archeology and Museums Partnership and an information panel has been set up at the site.

The hut represents the Mesolithic period and other materials used could include reed, heather and deer skins.

The museum also sells maps and information leaflets.

More details on their web site.

Mesolithic Hut by coldrum on Tuesday, 20 September 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
I usually visit the Ashdown Forest centre once a year and this year was no exception. However on turning the corner to reach the entrance I saw this very prehistoric looking hut.
Well I just had to have a look and had a read of the notice board beside the hut. It was built in the Autumn of 2010 so after my last visit.
I had a look inside and found It quite roomy.
It would be interesting to go in Winter and see how warm it is inside.
The centre has a leaflet about the hut, if there's none on display have a word with a member of staff.
If any-one is in the area definitly go and have a look.
Even if the centre is closed the area outside is usually open so you can still have a look.

(User Info | Send a Message)
You can go back in time and explore a wooden mesolithic hut at the Ashdown Forest Centre.

The outdoor construction, which is made using only natural materials, was erected to show how people lived on the forest 9,000 years ago.

It was made by the East Sussex Archeology and Museums Partnership and an information panel is due to be set up at the site with details about the period.

The hut represents the Mesolithic period and other materials used could include reed, heather and deer skins.
