Notgrove
Notgrove submitted by bec-zog : SP 095212. View of Notgrove Barrow in 1971 when the stones were exposed. Site was subsequently re-covered for protection purposes. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Long Barrow in Gloucestershire. Erm, it is a long barrow, honest!

Notgrove barrow is open for display but has been completely filled in, and the baggy, amorphous mound that is there now bears no resemblance to the original monument - I know because I stood on top of it with a plan and couldn't identify anything! It looks like a grassed-over gravel heap than a barrow.

The only information provided on-site is on a notice-board and is only a few sentences long. There is no plan or reconstruction, it and spends as many words saying when and why it was filled in as it does describing the barrow. All very disappointing.

The site does, however, have spectacular views in all directions and is easy to access. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it, but if passing it is worth while calling in to get a feel for its position in the landscape.

There is a lay-by on the main road next to the barrow and then a short walk of a few dozen meters down the road to the entrance.

excavation report of it in the 1936 Archaeologica.

Notgrove submitted by thecaptain : The sad remains of Notgrove long barrow seen from the east. You'd have thought that EH and the council would have made some effort when they "backfilled" it after excavation to make it at least look like a long barrow, but no, its a hopeless, shapless mess.

Notgrove
Notgrove submitted by Mr_Nakajima : I called in to see Notgrove having read the excavation report of it in the 1936 Archaeologica. As mentioned by others here the barrow is open for display but has been completely filled in, and the baggy, amorphous mound that is there now bears no resemblance to the original monument - I know because I stood on top of it with a plan and couldn't identify anything! It looks like a grassed-over grave...

Notgrove submitted by Thorgrim : What a disappointment this is! Pryor, untypically, misled me into thinking it was near the railway bridge. It has been infilled by the local council and it is very, very sad. Glad we have bec-zog's earlier photo to show us what it was. (1 comment)

Being fully excavated and 'restored' this looks like a building site on the Environment Agency lidar (grey icon next to that for CamRA) so it is hardly a 'model' example for lidar interpreters!

In the combined reports of the 1948-49 excavations at Cairnholy 1 & 2 and at White Cairn, Bargrennan, there is reference to "the closed cists such as that within the "rotunda" behind the chamber in the Notgrove long cairn in the Cotswolds."

Butterflies - wild flowers - you must be joking - I too returned (on 31/8/11) after a protracted absence - this has nothing to do with that over used term 'vandalism' - even English Heritage advice (to cut the grass at least once a year) has been ignored - this is the product of negligent management or shall we all be charitable and call it 'muddled thinking' - Hetty Pegler's refurbishment must have cost a pretty penny - all this required was 'the price of a gallon of petrol' to keep the strimmer going! No wonder the Butterflies have fled to Minchinhampton Common - and then just down the road there is the other extreme - in Guiting Power they now have 'Designer Barrow'

Has any-one locally thought about setting up a group to bring attention this barrow. Perhaps campaign to get a better sign put up and to get the grass cut more often. Even take people out to the monument as part of a guided tour of the area.
Just a thought.

Unfortunately this is, as the other reviewer tells, desperately disappointing. Having been backfilled it now resembles a pile of earth heaped up by a farmer, which has grass grown over it. 'Nothing to see here'. I am off to see Uley Long Barrow (Hetty Pegler's Tump) next, which I believe will be vastly more impressive. We live locally but if we had travelled to see this, we would have been gutted!

What an extremely disappointing site. Considering its one of the few long barrows to be signposted, and come with a parking area, you'd have thought that the council would have made some effort when they "backfilled" it after excavation to make it at least look like a long barrow, but no, its a hopeless, shapless mess.

What other monuments would they treat in this manner ?

I agree with previous comment - site needs better interpretaion for a site that is open to the public.

Apparently the English Heritage ecologist advises to cut the grass on the barrow once a year in August because the site cover is 'relict limestone grassland', increasingly rare in the Cotswolds due to the pressures of modern agriculture. It certainly is a tiny haven for butterflies and wild flowers, but a pity that one of the few publicly accessible sites appears so overgrown. More information at the site would be helpful.
