Chalbury Hillfort / Bincombe Barrows
Chalbury Hillfort / Bincombe Barrows submitted by TimPrevett : How much archaeology can you fit in one picture / location? Grid ref SY695838 Chalbury Hillfort, viewed from the south. Picture taken shortly after sunrise on 1st November 2003. 1) The hillfort is on the right hand side, the most prominent hill between the pylons. 2) To the right of the hillfort, on the horizon, is Came Wood / Down Barrow Cemetery. 3) In the centre, highest of all, are the Bincomb... Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by JimChampion : April 2005. Looking west from the top of Chalbury hillfort, the remains of the fortifications are in the foreground. The un-natural pits in the opposite hill are very striking, and I haven't yet found an explanation of them (the OS map and google give nothing). Their grid ref is something like SY687836: anyone know what they are? (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Chalbury Hillfort
Chalbury Hillfort submitted by TimPrevett : SY695838 View from the top of the hill fort, looking to the SSW towards Portland. This shows one of the stones clearly part of the hillfort (never ploughed!), a rim of the rampart, and the strip lynchets on the neighbouring hill. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by AngieLake : A noticeboard by the duckpond at Sutton Poyntz explains the geology and history of the area, including Chalbury hill. If this post isn't very clear, at least you will know where to look for it!

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by AngieLake : A view of Chalbury from Sutton Poyntz. Up a lane by a very picturesque cottage, bedecked with wisteria, is a field gate and a public footpath. This was taken looking west (?) from just inside the field. [13.05.08]

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett : A view down onto to Chalbury from the Bincombe Bumps - the blasted pylons & holiday camp to the rear! Still, it is one of the best angles from which to appreciate the terraced appearance of the ramparts of probably the oldest hillfort in Dorset. (1 comment)

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett : One of the stones in the south east area of Chalbury, looking east to the (not ancient) White Horse.

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett : In the central to south east area of the inner hillfort, down to the entrance which is at the south east corner, there are many stones. There are two stones in the foreground here, and another just left off the picture. The Bincombe Bumps are visible in the distance... as are those blasted pylons!

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett : Sunset as seen from the top of Chalbury on 17th May, with the south west inner rampart visible to the right.

Chalbury
Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett : The north west ramparts at Chalbury, top right and lower left. The ridges across the way are mediaeval strip lynchets, used for cultivation. On many old maps they are misleadingly referred to as "Celtic Fields"!

Chalbury Hillfort Hut Circles
Chalbury Hillfort Hut Circles submitted by TimPrevett : There are a good number of hut circles still on Chalbury, most shown by the different sorts of grass growing within, and without the circle; this shows at least 2 circles here. These are hard to photograph - this was was taken holding the camera aloft on a tripod, at an angle, on timer! As a result, I had a text message from my family & parents who had been watching me from their kitchen window!

Chalbury Hillfort
Chalbury Hillfort submitted by TimPrevett : A view of the fort, from the north, from the Came Wood Barrow Cemetery. The dark line out at sea is Chesil Beach - source of the natives' ammunition (thousands of small round pebbles!) in the futile defence of Maiden Castle against the Romans.

Chalbury Hillfort Entrance
Chalbury Hillfort Entrance submitted by TimPrevett : A view of the entrance, which still has stones showing as part of the entrance. This is on the SE side; buildings are part of Sutton Poyntz, and, as ever with this area, barrows look down from the ridges of the hills! (1 comment)
