Kings Newton Holy Well
Kings Newton Holy Well submitted by HOLYWELL : King Newton Derbyshire. The Holy Well (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Derbyshire,
This well was 1366 Noted as Halywalsiche. The purchase of the lands of St Catherine's Chantry, lately dissolved, in 1564, refers to lands at Holy well hedge and Hollywell siche.

Repaired in 1662 and had a carved inscription: 'FONS SAGER HIC STRVITVR ROBERTO NOMINIS HARDINGE 16xx'; which translates to 'This Holy well was built by Robert named Hardinge 16xx'. Briggs suggested the date of 1660, which is quite likely, as it coincides with the Restoration of Charles II. However, the inscription was later re-cut as pre-war postcards show the date to be quite clearly 1662. The arch survived for nearly 300 years but vandals and the roots of the nearby ash tree set over the arch, now lost. Waters said to flow towards the rising sun. Repaired in the 1980s, and a plaque beside it records the old inscription. It is signed from the road.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 922865, which records: "This well was 'demolished by vandals, 1952'. A few dressed stone blocks and a modern drain mark the site of this former well at SK 3857 2629."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this well - see their entry for the Holy Well, King’s Newton, Derbyshire, which gives directions for finding this site together with an 1893 drawing, a photograph of the restored well and a brief archaeology & history. TNA add some local folklore, which tells us: "There appears to be no records regarding its properties baring its ‘superior excellence of its waters‘, and being noted as a mineral spring. Interestingly, its waters are said to flow towards the rising sun."

To find the well, park by the Hardinge Arms pub, look for a gap in the wall and a public footpath sign. Head diagonally left downhill across the field from the stile here and you'll soon see another stile on your left - over that, turn right and the steps lead down to it a few yards further on.
