Visited today, and the museum is indeed fascinating - though a simple enquiry to take photographs (as I have at many other museums, either filling out a slip or carte blanche OK) yielded a succession of 3 members of staff seemingly quite concerned at the request from a paying, interested visitor. Made me wish I hadn't bothered asking. One would have thought they would have had a clear policy on photography already.

ANCIENT RELIC PROVES NOT TO BE SO VERY OLD
DIANNE BOURNE
12:00 - 10 February 2003

South cheshire Reporter
Researchers in Congleton now know just how old one of the town's oldest relics really is. Thanks to the persistence of a university student, documents have now been uncovered which can establish almost the exact date of the Astbury logboat, the most popular exhibit at Congleton Museum.
And the intriguing development is that the boat is not quite as old as everyone thought it was.
The boat, found at Ciss Green, Astbury, in 1923, was believed to date from around 500 BC.
But thanks to documents, unearthed by Congleton archaeology student Robert Hartle, while studying for his degree at Bristol University, the museum can now accurately date the boat to a mere thousand years old.
Mr Hartle found an article by a Cambridge University expert stating the boat was almost certainly carved between 960 and 1150 AD, and was more than likely built around 1000.
It is the first evidence found of the boat's date ??? and makes the boat around 500 years younger than had always been thought. The logboat, which is made of oak, was stored in a cellar at the Manchester Museum before being moved to Congleton last summer.
Ian Doughty, chairman of the Congleton Museum Trust is delighted that at last the true age of the boat is known.
He said: "It's wonderful to have tangible archaeological evidence that there was a thriving community in the Astbury area just before the Domesday Book was compiled. History isn't a static thing. The Dark Ages are getting lighter."
Information panels at the museum are now being rewritten in the light of the new information.
And a stone age man who looks over the boat may also have to be changed.
Museum administrator Louise Adams said: "It's quite exciting that we now have an accurate date for the boat.
"Lots of people come into the museum to see the boat because they've heard about it, and because it is a very evocative piece.
"Now we have an even clearer picture of the times it came from."

After twenty years of effort by its Trustees, this new Museum has opened in Congleton. On display in the small prehistory section are a number of fantastic artefacts as well as displays on The Bridestones and other nearby monuments. The Museum’s best exhibit is a dug-out boat which was found at Ciss Green near Astbury in 1923 by a farmer digging for gravel.

The boat had spent the last 80 years in the cellars of Manchester Museum before being returned to the town. The wooden boat, which is in remarkably good condition considering its age, would originally have been approximately 14 or 15 feet long. It has yet to be radiocarbon dated, but it is believed to date to either the Neolithic or Bronze Age.

Other items on display include a collared urn found while grave digging in Newbold Astbury graveyard in the 1950s, and a number of bronze tools including a hoard discovered in 1925 when building a local school. Items include two socketed spear heads and a small socketed axe. A bronze age urn discovered during excavation at The Bullstones in the 19th century also resides at the Museum but sadly this was very badly restored in the past and is awaiting conservation.

The prehistoric collection is only quite small, but very interesting and well worth a visit.
