Hordernm visited on 1st Jan 1974 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Grew up here. The Old Vicarage housed my play school. Paddled and dabbled in the spring many many times.

Holy Well in North Yorkshire

By the old vicarage, on Bankwell Lane, lies the Bank Well.
It was considered to be an 'eye' well. A lead figure was discovered in the well sometime last century, thought to be the representation of a fertility goddess.

Bank Well
Bank Well submitted by DavidRaven : The lead figurine, approximately 7.5 cm high, that was discovered in the well at the end of the 19th century. Formerly in the Pigyard Museum, Settle, now in private hands. The figurine was originally thought to be a Tudor child's toy. At some point, someone recognised the features and decoration was contemporary with artifacts of the La Tene culture, found at Merioneth. Some reckon this to be...
