Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire

"1935 saw the end of St. Helen's Mill in Waterside. Built by Nicholas England in 1835 it was named after the St. Helen's Well nearby which was reputed to have been named by the Romans." from Crambie, Geoff, R., (1978) A Colne Festival, Printed by: Turner & Earnshaw Ltd.

This well still exists, in the midst of the surrounding post industrial town, in an area of overgrown scrub woodland off Waterside Road.

Have been searching for St Helen's holy well at Waterside, Colne, at the given grid reference. Unfortunately, the well/spring seems to have gone, probably dried up and is no longer visible in the scrubland. Quite sad really, but luckily this photo was taken just in time.

The coordinates might be wrong. On Old Maps 1893 1:2500 there looks like a spring marked in the area at the corner of Exchange Street and Fountain Street.

Thank you David, I had wondered whether those co-ordinate were a bit out. A friend of mine thinks the spring is just off Shaw Street, which is sort of between Exchange Street and Waterside. Will have to have another look around there. There is a Spring Gardens and, as you say, Fountain Street along there.
