Tullos Hut Circles
Tullos Hut Circles submitted by cosmic : Edge of hut platform (Vote or comment on this photo)
Two potential hut circles have been identified during a fairly recent field survey on Tullos Hill. They are amongst over a hundred new archeological sites identified on Tullos Hill which was thought to have been archeological blitzed by a landfill site which has absorbed much of Aberdeen's waste for the last forty years.

They add to the archeological importance of this site which already has four known bronze age cairns. The survey also identified other possible cairns. It is hoped funds will be found for excavation to confirm the sites.

Excavation of prehistoric sites on Tullos Hill, Aberdeen, on behalf of Aberdeen City by Andy B on Monday, 03 September 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
There was another dig going on around here last week and an Open Day that we've just missed unfortunately, I can't find any information on it at the moment.

Tullos Hill, Aberdeen: Community Excavation Project 2010 by Andy B on Monday, 03 September 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
Tullos Hill is a prominent landmark on the southern edge of Aberdeen. Now almost surrounded by oil-related industrial estates, it preserves a number of archaeological sites. These range from four Scheduled cairns (Baron’s Cairn, Cat Cairn, Crab Cairn and Tullos Cairn) [see our nearby sites list above] to a post-WWII prisoner of war camp.

Away from the areas subjected to landfill operations, much of the area
is covered by dense vegetation.

Anticipating the cessation of landfill activities on Tullos Hill, a walkover
survey of those areas unaffected by the landfill was commissioned by
Aberdeen City Council (Suddaby 2004). This identified over 140 sites
(including SMR & NMRS sites). These included a cairn (NJ90SE 32), lying
on the summit ridge 60m to the east of Cat Cairn, and a circular enclosure
(NJ90SE 102) which may be a roundhouse or hut-circle on the lower ground
to the north. Following the submission of the survey data to ACC, a booklet
entitled ‘The Cheerful Vale, Exploring the Past of Balnagask, Tullos and
Torry’ was published by ACC in 2006 to coincide with an exhibition being
held at the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Shiprow, Aberdeen. Archaeological
work relating to the capping and management of the landfill site has taken
place recently on Tullos Hill (Peters 2009)

OK, I give up, where in the (Texas Phrase) heck, did "Tullos" originate??

Would appreciate any and all answers.

P.S. My earliest ancestor in the Colonies of America somewhere after 1641 was Cloud Tullos, an indentured servant. He was a tanner and a shoe maker and we are pretty sure he was Scottish.

Well this is a very late reply Billy, let's hope you still visit these pages!

I couldn't find the place name "Tullos" in any Place Name Dictionary but there are many names beginning with "Tully" or "Tilly" (of which there are a great many in Aberdeenshire) and there is the name "Tulloch", all thought to be from the gaelic "tulach" meaning hill or hillock. So Tullos might well mean "hill", "hillside", "hilly place", etc.

Of course it must be borne in mind that name derivations are based on educated guesswork, there is no way to definitively establish the origin of a name.
