West Yorkshire is a county of contrasts. The landscape most people will think of when the area is mentioned is that of the huge sprawling conurbation which sprung up during the Industrial Revolution. It is easy to forget that some parts of the region are comparatively wild and desolate, whilst others reveal a taste of rural tranquillity - green islands in an ever-encroaching urban sea. The county has a surprisingly rich legacy of ancient remains with over 10,000 entries mentioned on the Sites and Monuments Records.
