Contact them for permission to reproduce it. |  | | Description | This unique Pictish stone was found at Barflat beside the village of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, about 40m ENE of the Craw Stane. In the 6th century these two symbol stones stood in a large enclosure protected by two surrounding ditches and a palisade. The Craw Stane, still in its original position, marks the entrance. The rare, high quality and imported goods found here (in the 2010-2012 excavations) indicate this site was very likely the seat of a Pictish king and the name 'Rhynie' means 'very royal' These finds include amphora from the eastern Mediterranean and a remarkable iron pin in the shape of a slim-handled axe, a miniature of the ceremonial axe held by the Rhynie Man.
The stone is now displayed at the headquarters of Aberdeenshire Council, Woodhill House, Aberdeen. This photo is of the replica in the vestibule of Rhynie School. |
