Contact them for permission to reproduce it. |  | | Description | Another old Stonehenge postcard found in the antique shop on Exeter quay. It was written and posted in 'Lark Hill' but stamp ripped off, so unable to date accurately. Originally sepia, but had to scan in grey shades to get 'image size' low enough to post up.

Writer remarks: "We are camping quite close to Stonehenge; getting along splendidly and am in excellent health." I guess this was before the army camp was established?! |

(2012-11-30) | The picture dates from between 1901 & 1905 - probably 1904, when the new Antrobus took possession of the property from his uncle, the old Antrobus. Notice the wire fence surrounding the Stones, placed thusly so a fee of 5 shillings could be levied to enter the Circle. (This caused quite a stir in W Amesbury!)
We see the righted S-56, but there are no telegraph poles propped against any of the outer Sarsens - hence the estimated date.
The chalk path in the foreground is where byway 11 impinged into the Henge. This roadway was used thru 1918 by day-trippers, then the military. An echo of this byway still exists in the paved Tourist Path that now obliterates the North Barrow.
Seen just beyond S-11 is the East Split of the same byway. Passing very close to the Stones, it fell into disuse when the above-mentioned poles were installed.

(2012-12-02) | Thank you for that Feanor! I shall have to go back and buy the other two cards that I saw. I ran out of money after buying a Devonshire Assn report, and they wouldn't take a card for a transaction lower than £10! One card had the poles propping up the stones, and the other was colour-tinted but older, with S.56 still leaning. |
