Description After taking the sunset pics at the standing stone, I went back to the west-end stones of the southernmost row again, and knelt down to take this shot across the side of them, from north to south. They look like two moonwatchers - you can just pick out the top of the standing stone about a quarter of the way along the skyline, between the stones and the right edge of the pic!Funny how the complimentary flash brings out the stones so brightly! Obviously, the moon had moved across the sky since the previous pic.

The tip of the standing stone is just visible on the skyline, about a quarter of the way between the stones and the right side of this pic.

Ignore that last comment, I must have entered it before someone had finished updating the first part! By the way, the stones of the circle are too low to be visible from here.

when i was last at Merryvale in June, I noted what I thought were some interesting alignments of which the giant megalith was the focus. I never got round to writing up anything on Merryvale yet - theres already loads of stuff on here about it so I have concentrated on lesser known sites. Trouble is I am now forgetting it all ! but basically, alignments between the menhir and various tor peaks and notable rock lumps to the north cut the double rows at places where there are larger or more pointed stones arranged sideways. This happens about 4 times, so I dont think it can be a fluke. The cairn circle iin the middle is also on one of these lines.

Jack Walker writes about various alignments with the Merrivale stones and tors at significant times in his book 'Dartmoor Sun' (Halsgrove).
