The General's stone is thought to once have been part of Kit's Coty House, one of the Medway Group of burial chambers and is located just up the hill North of Little Kits Coty. The stone is located on private property in the middle of farmland and is now in at least three pieces. This from Paul Garwood:-
"The General’s Stone is something of an enigma. After Stukeley’s drawing of 1722, the stone was purportedly buried by the tenant farmer, Bentham, in 1787, and there is a report of a later farmer, Costin, blowing it up in 1867 to remove obstructions to ploughing. However, a large stone was uncovered in the same area in 1956 and photographed by McCrerie, who though it could be The General’s Stone (despite being very different in form) Whether any of these sarsens are the same as that drawn by Stukeley I suspect is likely to remain unknown, especially as large sarsens occur naturally across the whole area and have often been moved to field edges by farmers"
Local people in the area, including the landowner, know it as the General's Stone. It causes a huge obstruction to farming and is now overgrown but the broken sarsens can be seen in winter when the leaves have gone. The location and indeed Kit's Coty itself can be viewed from the Kent Wildlife Trust picnic area on Bluebell Hill - see the accompanying pic. Kits Coty is marked on the left at the edge of the pic and the General's Stone is marked on the right
