The Necropolis of Phourni lies on the top of a hill just Northwest of the small wine town of Epano Arkhanes which is 15 Km south of Herakleion.
This Tholos dates from 1400 BCE and could be seen as the transition between the chambered tombs of the Neolithic and more classical tombs like that of King Philip of Macedon. It is about 4 meters high, completely roofed with stones, partialy built into the hill incline and has an entrance pasage about 6 meters long. It is not thought that a tumulus covered the chamber, but it may have been better decorated. An intact burial of a high ranking female, with gold jewelery, horse and bull sacrifices was found inside the side chamber.
The rest of the site, with other collapsed Tholoses dates back to the early Bronze age, ca 3000 BCE. |
| Posted Comments: Thorgrim (2004-10-05) | Thanks Alex! Superb photographs of Crete and with model descriptions.
We would be grateful if you could complete new site forms so we can log them properly and get them on the Megalithic Map (approximate latitude and longitude refs will be needed for that) Thanks |
