| Posted Comments: Teedlepip (2005-04-04) | I have passed this stone countless times and was well aware of it's association with the local legend of the nine maidens. According to the story a farmer sent his nine daughters one after the other to fetch water at the well. When none returned a prospective husband of one of the girls set out to discover their whereabouts only to come up against the serpent or dragon which had eaten them for luch. It goes without saying that our hero slew the creature on the spot. I was not aware that the stone featured these carvings as it is situated in the middle of a cultivated field and I have therefore been wary of getting close for fear of incurring the local farmers wrath. Interesting photograph! |
