I haven't come across any information to indicate how the cups could be formed by mineral errosion. The cups at Robin Hood's Stride look like natural errosion, and they are more rounded, in much softer sandstone. This stone is much harder and would keep the carved shapes for longer.
I would love to know what these cups were all about. Do you think they were the product of some sort of stone smoothing or sharpening process? |
