With some very good digital equipment we got some great results. |
| Posted Comments: Thorgrim (2004-09-16) | Very effective! Flash would have killed the designs stone dead. Please tel us how you did it - others will be interested to try the technique. | AngieLake (2004-09-16) | Great picture! Wish I'd had a lighting partner when I visited. I even forgot that I might need a torch, and the darkness spooked me - made it sooo eerie!! I filmed it on 'nightshot' with my camcorder, so it's in black and white, and the film is rather shaky!! What a wimp! (Next time - BIG lantern!!) | ArchaeologySafaris (2004-09-16) | Actually, I used a cheap (£2.99) torch which was directed from one side of the stone (to the left as we look at it, I am just out of shot) in a sweeping motion from top to bottom. While this was happening my camera (a Sony F828) set an a tripod, was set to an exposure of 5 seconds. The oblique lighting provided the light and shadow required to see the design while the camera had time to record it on a single frame. So the stone was 'painted with light'. Hope that helps. Cheers. | Abby (2004-09-20) | Ads, that's come out brilliantly, it even shows up some faint markings down at the base which weren't apparent when we were there AND managed to pick up that faint spiral/concentric circle at the same time. | nicoladidsbury (2004-09-21) | Do you think the spiral is contempory with the rest of the design, or perhaps an earlier carving. The spiral is very similar to the ones on long meg, in Cumbria | ArchaeologySafaris (2004-09-25) | Nicola
I wonder also if there were two spirals at the top at some point. It does look as if the spiral was there before the rest of the design, as it almost looks coincidental, faint and possibly damaged - perhaps the stone was moved into position in the passage, because it had the spiral(s) and then was decorated further as part of the monument. I will have a closer look next time we visit.
