The stone is said to date from the 9th-10th century AD, but could, in fact, be earlier. It is often claimed to be a 'battle-stone' marking the site of a battle in 937 AD.
The top section is a four-armed cross that was set on top of the monolith sometime between 1830-1840 by R.T.Wroe Walton of Marsden Hall. |
