There is an interesting folklore description on the reverse side of the Victorian carte-de-visite photograph, dated around 1880.
An ancient saga states that a Viking called Rudd died in England and was buried in the Yorkshire Wolds. His Beuta Stone was sent over from Denmark and erected on this spot. Ever after, the place was called Rudston.

Interesting indeed. The common spelling is "bautasten". The term is used for all kind of standing stones without inscriptions.
