Now that the blackthorn has been cleared the shape of the defences are clearly visible in the top centre of the photo. The promontory must have been an incredible place to live 2000 years ago and its naturally defensive position is quite obvious from this angle. Beautiful and bountiful but harsh.
The elements would have been quite unforgiving up here and the sea gales would have warranted strong defences as much as hostile neighbours.
