Or, having looked at the map, is it trees? I am surprised trees will grow up there on the top of the ridge, and the map seems to show the land completely forested. Is it all dying out, and just occasional stragglers remain?
Or could it be huge Welsh lemmings, following each other along the ridge before leaping to their deaths?

They are trees, but there is a lot of deforestation going on around here at the moment due to some disease.
