If I've got this right, the large stone on the ground points south [towards bottom right corner], the nearest trilithon shows the outer face of 53 and 54 [nearest camera], and the stone leaning out to the right is the shorter No.11, and behind it is No. 10. The central area of grass in this photo must be the site of the low mound discovered about a year ago. [?] The caption 'Great Trilithon' would normally be applied to Stones 55 and 56 [the latter the only one of that pair left standing, and tallest of the monument, at SW. |

(2012-03-26) | Nice find Angie and your commentary is quite accurate — right down to the location of the Mound. Stone 12 does point South, though Cardinal South from the Circle's center passes through the right side of 54 and directly through stumpy 11. (One possible reason the Romans may have fiddled with it!)
The 1920's & early 30's saw renewed public interest in Great Henge, mainly due to Hawley's arguably disastrous 'excavations'. I would date this photo to 1930 or 31 as the grounds to the right (east), within the Dike, are healed for the most part.
The caption might be forgiven as many of the names common to us today were new then — and who's not impressed with the intact, robust South Trilithon? |
