The Polisher is a sarsen stone on Fyfield Down and is in close proximity to a settlement of the "Beaker Folk". Used to polish stone axes, it is not easy to find and has become something of a Holy Grail to Megaraks.
This photograph gives significant clues to its location - the triangular stone and the lone tree are pointers. There is another pointer nearby which makes finding the Polisher a certainty, but I am not going to divulge that. I searched on three separate occasions and only found it after looking at just about every sarsen on the Down! On my first two attempts, I walked up the Herepath from Avebury. At the third and succesful attempt, I walked along the Ridgeway from The Sanctuary passing the many barrows. It was something of a pilgrimage and such a beautiful way to go, across the endless rolling downs and all around me was the high, wide lonesome. Wonderful place. |
