One of the largest neolithic round barrows in Britain. 36m across 6m high ( originally 9-10m high). first excavated 1890.
Clay covered chalk mound with chalk capping. 10 primary burials with skeletons of adults & children plus bone pins, antler macehead, flint knife and other worked flint tools. In the upper part of the mound 22 cremation burials were found plus futher cremations within the structure giving 53 to date .
The site stands within 10.5 hectare circular Henge enclosure (~375m diam). A wide inner ditch, 4 causeways & narrow outer ditch.
