The red paint is added to allow identification by visitors and to preclude accidental walking on the site and to stop folk chalking in the images in order to get a photograph (the chalk can adversely affect the carvings). The paint is applied by archaeologists and is water based so that it does not adversely affect the art. September 2011. |
