The stones encircling this cairn define a significant area on this exposed hilltop.
The Interpretation Panel at the car park area reports that the area has not been fully investigated or excavated, so its original usage is unclear but it offers the following suggestion:
"An Ancient Farm: Are the stones the remains of a burial cairn or a stone circle? Using the limited evidence, Stenacleit is probably best interpreted as a prehistoric settlement with a surrounding stock enclosure. If correct, this is a rare survival in the Western Isles.
In the 1930s a group dug 'a small hole in the exact centre;. Finds of pottery, flint and bone were apparently discovered but these have since been lost"
As in Drew's earlier image, the 'weather' can be fairly impressive up here, and the next band of rain can easily be seen coming in from the Atlantic!
