| Posted Comments: caradog (2011-09-19) | Shame about the fence being there, is there a stone circle or cairn ?
| NickiMacRae (2011-09-19) | No, not in the very immediate vacinity (i.e. the same field) but across the road about 80m there is either the damamged remains of a stone circle or a cairn circle - some interesting info and photo's here http://her.highland.gov.uk/SingleResult.aspx?uid=MHG8593 . There is also some evidence that there was a low mound around the stone, but this isn't evident now. One of the names for the stone in gaelic is Clach Chairidh, which is 'stone of the burial mound' - this could relate to the local legend that this stone marked the burial place of a Danish prince who was killed in battle there, or perhaps something more ancient? Douglas Scott's done some very interesting research into the stone and another standing stone thats now fallen / taken down at Dounie, a couple of km and proposes a line of sight between them. |
