Has clear wear in parts & was covered in moss & algae which was carefully cleaned off
Measures 30" x 30" x 10"thick any help appreciated. |
| Posted Comments: Andy B (2011-09-12) | Hello, I'm not expert enough to date this other than to say I'm certain it's not Neolithic in date. They didn't make such clear representational art of this sort that early.
Anyone? | cerrig (2011-09-12) | He's got Sem's eyes!! | TheCaptain (2011-09-12) | very clear and detailed tooling marks make it seem quite new, not neo, if you ask me. | Jimwithnoname (2011-09-12) | I've seen these down the garden centre hehe, (sorry, couldn't resist being silly..) | Sunny100 (2011-09-13) | I agree, its a recent carving - but interesting all the same. | robbbo (2011-09-13) | lol Jim, if im honest iv seen similar too at garden centres ....this tho was in the foundation rubble of a 16th centurn barn which was demolished in Feb of this year ...archaeological information was recorded at the time by Four archaeologists with regard to a roman well discovered right next to it, this was also photographed at the time in situe but as yet no true identification hence my help needed lol | theCaptain (2011-09-13) | shouldn't be too hard to get a reasonable date given all those tooling marks. | Jimwithnoname (2011-09-13) | It's fantastic that it's lasted so long :) | Freedom (2011-12-18) | Greetings. Just a thought, similar style carvings have been found in the Marquesas islands, Pacific. I imagine matching up the stone & tools would be key. The Spanish did visit the region in the 1600's, it is plausable some artifacts could have made their way north from Spanish ports. Though most likely a Pagan deity of the region it was found, it has a folk art feel to it. |
