When the shogunate government was getting collapsed, the samurais on the Awaji island took the side of the overthrowing alliance while their feudal lord Tokushima samurais supported the shogunate. After the restoration completed, the Awajis hoped for awards for their distinguished service, and for Awaji island's independence. Then frustrated Tokushimas attacked and killed some Awajis. Both parties were blamed. In 1871, the main assassins were put to death (the last harakiri as punishment in Japanese history), the Awaji vassals were exiled here the land of severe cold and primeval forests 1000km away from their warm home-island, and the Awaji island was merged into the opposite prefecture across the strait.
The exiles started a new lives as settlers and farmers not samurais on this casi hill which they called ‘Goten-yama’ = hill of our lord’s palace. Nowadays this area has become a breeding zone of racehorses.
