All the plates in this wonderful book are copperplate engravings. It will be the Bicentennary of the publication of Volume 1 next year and I would like to see some recognition of this wonderful piece of work as Hoare and Cunnington really began the excavation and recording of these Wiltshire monuments and have termed pioneers, fathers of prehistory and archaeology. |
| Posted Comments: angieweekender (2011-08-01) | I have borrowed a facsimile of this 2 volume book and would recommend anyone to have a look at it, if they can locate a copy(Swindon Public Library has a reference copy, i believe). The book is full of works of art in its own right. The plates are detailed copper engravings. Colt Hoare's surveyor was called Philip Crocker and he worked for the Ordnance Survey. I will post photos of some of the maps later. |
