(2011-04-30) | Hi Captain, like nddavies, it would never have occurred to me that 'recumbent' brought with it any suggestion of a stone being laid down intentionally, merely one which had once been a standing stone which was now lying down.
I have certainly never had that sense of it from any of the COFLEIN or RCAHMS site entries I have read. It occurs to me that we aren't really sure why most of these were made to be 'standing' in the first place, so it seems to be stretching things to think we know mode or motivation for them now being horizontal?
It might be interesting to get Andy to have a little 'vote on the side', by which I mean one of his polls on the right hand of the home page to see what the common interpretation is? Something along the lines of 'What does the word recumbent mean to you when used to describe a standing stone.....any chance of us allowing some variant of the AV system rather than only one choice...? | TheCaptain
