It is considerably larger than the White Tower of London, but most of its facing of septaria and ashlar has been stolen revealing the rubble core with very many Roman bricks. The museum collection is beautifully presented and contains flint tools from the Palaeolithic through to the late Neolithic. One of the "must sees" is the mysterious wooden idol found at Dagenham dating from the Bronze Age. There is a wonderful display of bronze weapons and a smith's hoard showing raw lumps of bronze, broken and cut up axes and palstaves ready to be melted down and recast. Recycling metal is nothing new and the display continues with a dazzling heap of finished axe heads. The museum is much concerned with the Roman occupation and the Boudiccan revolt that destroyed the veterans' colony and burnt the town. The gruesome display of skulls showing horrific sword cuts is a magnet for schoolchildren. Beneath the keep are the Roman vaults that include an early pagan temple to Claudius. A visit is highly recommended.

| Posted Comments: foxtrot (2004-06-07) | I have been in and around this Castle, if you are in Colchester it is a must! the grounds are very large and will take a few hours to cover. | absynthia01 (2011-02-06) | I have done many Saxon and Vike re-enactments in the Castle Park, and a few history fairs to boot. The castle is my favourite castle in England as it's in the town where I was born! |
