When Dovercourt Boat owning brothers Gordon and Eric Hazelton, both engine drivers, began combing the shoreline, little
did they dream they would amass what was to be described as “Probably
the finest collection of flint tools and artefacts discovered in Essex.”
Documenting their finds with photographs and drawings, they made a
unique, detailed record which they always intended would be passed on to
Colchester Castle museum.
Three years ago, Eric handed over the collection and museum staff were
amazed as the hundreds of artefacts appeared. Now, 13 years after
Gordon’s death and two years after Eric’s, a part of their collection
along with their written records and photographs has gone on display
inside the entrance of Colchester Castle.
As their nephew, Miles Dumble says, “When Dr. Paul Sealey, showed my
mother Elva, father and myself around, we all felt that Eric and Gordon,
both wonderful men, would be well pleased that some of the Hazelton
Collection is on display.” |
