This is not shown on the map but it seems to be a small wedge tomb even though the stones, particularly the capstone, seem disproportionately massive for what is an unusually small chamber. Hmm.....genuine? |
| Posted Comments: Michael Slade (2005-07-04) | I photographed this site in the spring of 2005. A local farmer came by and jokingly said that it was put up several years ago by Hitachi (whatever that means).
Looking at the stones it seems that the side supporting stones have been in the ground in a horizontal plane for much longer than they have been standing vertical (look at the weathering line that is clearly shown on the right stone). The band of white against the band of darker limestone shows clearly that this stone has been recently excavated and propped upright. Also the fact that the side stones are set ON the ground and not IN the ground shows to me that this is a modern reconstruction.
It is over a hedgerow and is pretty well hidden (I caught a glimpse of it as we were passing by).
My guess is that it's modern, but I'm not an expert and this is based off of my visual impressions, and the comments of the local farmer.
