(2011-02-26) | These early Chola temples from Tamil Nadu are all build from granite. But one finds all kinds of different types and colors of granite. From dark blue upto light pink. This floor is almost orange-brown. The Pallavas also build with sandstone, for instance the Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram, which is badly weathered because of the material used. But most of the rock in south India is granite or gneiss, thus that was used. Many of these temple are not at all near any granite, so the stone must have come from some distance. The strange color of the pillars is paint. A combination of taste and availability. Almost all these temple are suffering because of lack of resources. The shrines are definitely Early Chola, my guess is possibly rebuild by Rajaraja himself. The mandapam is probably early Nayaka, 14th century. The advatange of this temple being half forgotten is that it has not undergone recent renovations. A lot of money is sometimes spent on horrible renovations. The you find stuff done with concrete. Advantage and/or disadvantage, it never lasts long. | liesbethpankaja
(2011-02-26) | The slabs that are used to close the space are also granite slabs. It is an ideal for a temple to cover the prakara, the circumambulatory courtyard. The method is to have pillars and beams and close the space with these flat slabs. | TheCaptain
