Viewed from the South. The chamber is damaged (probably by historic destruction attempts) and partly exposed. Four orthostats and a (the) moved and massive capstone are preserved.
It is a 600m walk from Rothenstein farm. Access is limited as the site is situated in a field.

(2011-01-02) | Striking photo! I prefer this type of post-sunset shot, where the outside is softly lit, but the inside of the chamber is left in pitch darkness, making it appear more mysterious. Nice sky, too. | Martin L

Anyway a funny visit: There was beggar’s lice growing beside the site so my gloves and coat looked quite decorated after an accidental contact ;)
And it looks so calm now on the photos, but in fact it was a steady and stormy wind out there that evening. Temperature was not really low, only -5°C, but the wind chill factor must have been enormous. As a result we could not spend more than 20 minutes at the site, but this time just was great. A fast change of interesting lighting conditions.

(2011-01-04) | Thanks Guile. Yes, a considerable percentage of funnel beaker megaliths is built of red / reddish granite erratics (from Scandinavia). Often this is hard to notice due to growth of algae/lichen/moss. Especially as most remaining megaliths nowadays are situated inside woodland or are at least surrounded by bushes and trees what usually seems to create a algaefilm-friendly micro-climate. On the more protected surfaces at the inside of the chambers detection of the megaliths original colour often is more easy. |
