Sometimes fires such as this are good in that they can reveal ancient sites that have been hidden by vegetation, although the action of the fire on stones can damage or even destroy them.
This fire was fairly superficial and moved through quickly, the Fire Service let it burn itself out at natural breaks rather trying to contain it, although they did have their hoses on vehicles in the car park to keep them cool and they shut the road.
I heard at the time that somebody probably started the fire deliberately.

(2010-12-02) | This reminds me of when I was visiting the Flerio Kouros, when the old lady whose land it's on press-ganged us tourists into fire-fighting against an oncoming blaze that threatened her farm. |
