(2004-08-10) | It is a lovely holy well, but uncared for; the little deck bridge over the spring leading to it has nettles growing up through the crevices and the building itself is covered with wild green growth which is probably threatening the structure. The owner of the land clearly does not care about it an is also has the "get orf maaah land" mentality, he has placed barbed wire on the side of the stile on his land to discourage visitors. Is he responsible for the upkeep of the well, does anyone know what the legal position is? | rhinestonemaiden
(2004-08-10) | I forgot to mention the inside of the holy well. It is possible to open the little oak door, but what disappointment inside! There is just mud. If the mud is removed would the well fill up with spring water again? | Thorgrim
(2004-08-10) | When I was there the water was clear and flowing out into the meadow. The bridge was clear of weeds, but it was early in the year. Don't know who is responsible for the upkeep as it seems to be outside church land The farmer is behaving illegally if he has put barbed wire across a footpath. It must be a legal footpath because people must have been using it to get to the well for centuries. It is a lovely well and deserves better care. If you are local to it, a chat with someone from the church or parish council might help. |
