The stone depicts, though rather eroded, a Roman soldier and his wife. A faint inscription at the botom of this slab recalls: ALANCIA CIVIS ET CONJUNX EJUS HIC EST or Alancias the citizen and his wife are buried here.
The stone was excavated in 1698 near Gaer Farm, close to the Roman fort of Y Gaer (Gaer Bannium) from whence it was erected beside the Roman road, west of Brecon. |
