I use one of the most reasonably priced consumer SLR Nikon ever built: the D40. Production is ceased for 3 years now afaik, but it still has only few limitations for the amateur things I like to do. As I always use manual settings of exposure time and aperture (and sometimes focus), a point & shoot won’t do. Otherwise there are plenty of excellent Point & Shoot Cams from various manufacturers if you mainly do photos at daytime. But one major criticism about Point & Shoot Cams is: they often do not last that long as it seems.
@Hamish: Thank you. In most cases I used a „normal“ torch-light so far, but yes you are right: I recently bought a LED-torch for other purposes, but I tried it out in this one (combined with off-camera flash).
